To measure the carbon footprint of SAF, we consider the production, use, transportation, and recycling or disposal of the product—a process known as life cycle carbon footprint analysis. For example, for SAF derived from used vegetable oils: these oils are produced from plants that absorb atmospheric CO2 during their growth through photosynthesis. The oils are used and then recycled to produce fuel. The overall carbon footprint of this SAF is calculated by deducting the CO2 absorbed upstream from the emissions generated by its combustion during the flight.
